When It Comes To Charging Your Cellphone, Looks Like Hydrogen May Just Be The New Black

Why it’s Breakthrough: It’s a hydrogen-powered cell-phone charger. It’s renewable and best of all, doesn’t require a user to tap into the electrical grid at any point.

The Story: Taiwanese scientists at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, a non-profit research institute under the supervision of the Republic of China Ministry of Economic Affairs, announced that they have successfully created a hydrogen-powered mobile phone charger that’s capable of recharging a mobile phone battery in two hours. And all without the need to plug into a wall outlet.

“Hydrogen is a recyclable material,” said Tsau Fanghei, a researcher at the institute. “The device is energy-efficient and will help protect the environment. We will continue to improve the invention. We hope the hydrogen-powered device can replace current cell phone recharge systems in 2012.”

As reported by the Taiwanese news organization AFP, Taiwan is anxious to develop its own new energy sources, since about 98% of the country’s energy is imported. The director of the economics ministry’s Bureau of Energy, Yeh Hui-ching, said that the new charger would be a fundamental example of the government’s push to become a major player in green technologies.

“The government hopes to acquire a slot in the global green energy industry’s production chain with the hydrogen fuel cell technologies,” Yeh Hui-ching said. “It seeks to make the sector’s key expertise a local content by 2012 and begin commercial production as soon as possible.”
