Giving Plastic Milk Containers A Fun Second Life – Eco-toys
Why It’s Breakthrough: Green Toys line of classic toys uses recycled plastic milk containers. 100% recycled-plastic toys help save energy and reduce greenhouse emissions.
The story: Green Toys Inc.’s line of classic toys uses 100% recycled plastic milk containers to make safe, eco-friendly childrens toys that do not contain phthalates (you read that right, phthalates are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers – substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility). They are chiefly used to soften polyvinyl chloride. Phthalates are being phased out of many products in the United States and European Union over health concerns. Green Toys products also do not contain Bispenol-A (BPA), or lead, and they also meet FDA food contact standards. Green Toys 100% recycled-plastic toys help save energy and reduce greenhouse emissions. For instance, by using one pound of recycled plastic milk containers saves enough energy to run a TV for three weeks. Being green also means doing business locally. All Green Toys Inc. operations are located within close proximity of one another in the San Francisco Bay Area, which also helps reduce its carbon footprint by avoiding long transportation distances.
